Wild green yonder


Elizabeth McGowan Observers expecting all of the U.S. Air Force's technological advances to come with wings might be puzzled by the Pentagon's latest down-to-earth investment. Unless the laws of gravity are somehow reconfigured, 25,300-pound dump trucks won't ever be taking flight.
But these behemoths are the centerpiece of $6.8 million worth of contracts with Volvo to introduce its heavy-vehicle hybrid technology to North America. Mack Trucks, a subsidiary of the Swedish company, is building six trucks with electric motors and diesel engines for the Air force.
